An Excursion to the Old World

I am a student at the University of Toronto (Canada), going on what was once called "the Grand Tour" -- a trip around the whole of Northern Europe (and, perhaps, in the near future, Southern Europe as well). My parents and I should be spending about 3 months on our tour. I hope you will enjoy reading about my experiences, and feel free to suggest places to go (or pictures to take).

The Cairfax Tower

Before getting to the Bodleian, a detour...

This was the top of the tower from which I got that panoramic view of Oxford -- called Cairfax tower. It is located in the original center of Oxford, and for a price of 1 pound, you can walk up the rickety circular staircase, and reach the top of the tower.

Cairfax tower originally was part of a 13th century church. However, the church had to be demolished to allow for more space for cars in the small square --> this just gives you an idea of the sheer number of old churches and buildings which are found in England.

From the tower, you can also see some other interesting places (besides the Oxford Colleges).

Just opposite the tower is an old inn where William Shakespeare used to break journey, on his way from Stratford-upon-avon to London. The building is no longer an inn, but the room where he stayed still exists in its original state (unfortunately not open to visitors). Posted by Picasa
